EMILY. (She throws the letter at WALKER and grabs her things) Real nice Walker.

WALKER. What are you talking about?

EMILY. Why would you make me read this letter? To torture me?

WALKER. Emily, I didn’t know-

EMILY. Right… You didn’t know? Okay, sure. So you’re telling me you didn’t know that they both killed themselves?

WALKER. Well we don’t know that Noel-

EMILY. He said “See you in 2000” like he was going to- This isn’t- This doesn’t matter. None of this matters. This only proved that once again, I was right.

WALKER. Right about what?

EMILY. Right about love, Walker.  It’s worthless, it means nothing. It’s supposed to be the greatest force on Earth, but it can’t save anyone. I can’t believe I actually got my hopes up, and was hoping that those two would prove me wrong, that love does work, and if you find it with the right person you’ll be okay. But there is no right person.

WALKER. There is a right person! People can be saved! People can always be saved… Noel and Elaine weren’t just there to love each other – they were there to help each other. Elaine just… didn’t know she could reach out for it…

EMILY. B-But she seemed completely fine. She had nothing to lose… What’s to say that that may happen to us? To me.

WALKER. That won’t happen, I promise. I’m going to make sure of it.

EMILY. Walker?

WALKER. Yeah?

EMILY. Why do you care about me so much?

WALKER. You’re my best friend.

EMILY. I’m a terrible best friend. I spend most days bitter and rude.

WALKER. Sometimes we see things in people that they may not see in themselves.

EMILY. Like?

WALKER. You’ll find out one day Emily Russo.

EMILY. (sighs) Oh Walker… I don’t know if I will.

WALKER. You can take the future, even if you fail.

EMILY. (groans with a bit of a smile on her face) You’re such a nerd. And you know how much I hate ABBA.

WALKER. I love to bring up things you hate. ABBA… me.

EMILY. I could never hate you.

WALKER. I’m sure you’re happy we’re separating next year.

EMILY. Don’t say that. I haven’t even processed how i’m going to wake up and not see you everyday.

WALKER. (shrugs) Don’t worry… You’ll make tons of friends. I know you will.

EMILY. Maybe. But nobody will be you.

There’s a moment of silence, tension building between the two, as if they’re waiting for the other to say what they want to hear.

EMILY. I better go… I’m sure Mark’s here by now.

WALKER. Yeah, you probably should.

EMILY. (gives him a hug) I’ll see you tomorrow?

WALKER. (nods) Yeah, of course.

As EMILY exits stage right, WALKER sighs and walks over to his chair, taking out a piece of paper and a pen. He feels as though he blew his one chance to say something, to do something about EMILY

WALKER. Dear Emmy…
